The Theory Test for learner drivers was first introduced by the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) in 1996. It's purpose is to better prepare provisional licence holders for driving on today's demanding roads and all of the responsibilities that come with being a full licence holder.
Since its introduction the test has been updated several times and now includes a Hazard Perception test which tests candidates on their reaction to developing hazards when driving or riding. To assist our learner drivers all of our Instructors have available for you to hire or buy various videos, books and CD’s to help you with your tuition for the Theory test (and Practical) we suggest for the theory test that you study at home with assistance from your instructor when required. Separate theory training is available in most areas by special arrangement (If you are finding the test difficult to pass on your own).
The Theory Test is split into two parts. The first is a multiple choice test comprising of 50 questions. This is carried out using a touch screen computer. The pass mark is 43. The second part is a Hazard Perception Test. This is a series of 14 separate video clips showing hazardous situations. You identify these hazards by clicking the mouse at the appropriate time. You must score 44 or more out of 75 to pass. Once you pass both parts you will then need to take your practical driving test within 2 years otherwise you will have to retake both parts again.
Theory Test Fee
The combined theory and hazard perception test currently costs £31.
